Server 8.x for SqueezeBox Classic?

Hi,
since long time I took a look at the webinterface of my squeezebox-server, and to my surprise I see a new version available: 8.1.
For years it was stuck at 7.7
But since I use a fairly old squeezebox (now called "classic" ) I do not know if it is possible, or wise to upgrade?
Player: Squeezebox Classic, Firmware: 137
Server: Logitech Media Server Versie: 7.7.5 - 1416570306, running on RH / CentOS 7
Perl-versie: 5.16.3 - x86_64-linux-thread-multi
Databaseversie: DBD::SQLite 1.34_01 (sqlite 3.7.7.1)

Can I safely upgrade? Is a fresh application install better? Or should I stick to 7.7?
Who can advice?
