Yes. I got 20k files on my NAS. Running LMS on the Pi accessing these
files on the NAS is much faster than running LMS on the same NAS.

Correct.
As I said I'm running my library on a Pi 3B+. Before that a 3B. Both are
fast enough for my needs. The Pi 4 would be even faster, but can cause
thermal challenges.
